Living through repeated or long-term trauma can change the way you see yourself, other people, and the world around you.
If you feel constantly on edge after a traumatic event, struggle to trust others, or carry lasting emotional pain, you may be living with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).
At Lenape Wellness Center, we provide personalized complex PTSD treatment for adults living with complex PTSD.
Our trauma-informed approach helps you process past experiences, develop healthy coping skills, and begin moving toward lasting healing.
What Is Complex PTSD?
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing repeated or prolonged trauma.
Unlike PTSD, which often develops after a single traumatic event, complex PTSD is usually linked to ongoing trauma over months or years.
Examples of traumatic experiences include:
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Domestic violence
- Human trafficking
- Long-term emotional abuse
- Repeated sexual abuse
- Living in a war zone
- Being held captive or imprisoned
Along with the symptoms of PTSD, complex PTSD often affects how you regulate emotions, view yourself, and build relationships.
These challenges can continue long after the trauma has ended, but healing is possible with the right support.
What Causes Complex PTSD?
Complex PTSD develops after repeated exposure to traumatic experiences that leave you feeling trapped, powerless, or unable to escape.
Several factors may increase your risk of developing C-PTSD, including:
- Childhood trauma
- Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
- Long-term domestic violence
- Human trafficking
- Military combat
- Ongoing community violence
- Repeated exposure to traumatic events
- Limited access to support after trauma
Not everyone who experiences trauma develops complex PTSD. Your personal experiences, support system, and other factors all play a role.
Symptoms of Complex PTSD
Complex PTSD includes many of the same symptoms as PTSD. However, it also affects your emotions, relationships, and sense of identity.
You may experience:
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Nightmares
- Avoiding reminders of the trauma
- Feeling constantly on edge
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulty controlling emotions
- Intense shame or guilt
- Feeling worthless
- Persistent sadness
- Difficulty trusting others
- Relationship challenges
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
These symptoms can make work, relationships, and everyday responsibilities feel overwhelming.
Types of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
Unlike some mental health conditions, complex PTSD doesn’t have separate subtypes or presentations.
Instead, providers recognize that symptoms can affect people differently. Some people struggle most with emotional regulation, while others have greater difficulty with relationships, self-esteem, or intrusive trauma symptoms.
Your treatment plan should reflect your unique experiences and recovery goals.
What Happens if Complex PTSD Goes Untreated?
Without treatment, complex PTSD can affect nearly every area of your life. Symptoms often become more difficult to manage over time and may contribute to additional mental health concerns.
Untreated complex PTSD may increase your risk of:
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
- Substance misuse
- Social isolation
- Relationship difficulties
- Difficulty maintaining employment
- Chronic physical health problems
- Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
You don’t have to continue living in survival mode. Complex PTSD treatment can help you regain a sense of safety, confidence, and hope.
