Group Therapy

One of the most profound human experiences is the feeling of being truly understood. The thought that “no one else gets it” can be incredibly isolating in moments of struggle. Group therapy is a powerful antidote to this isolation. It is a unique and effective form of psychotherapy where a small, curated group of individuals meets to share their experiences, learn from one another, and explore challenges under the guidance of a trained therapist.

At Lenape Wellness Center, we believe that healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it happens in a community. Our program is built around creating a safe, supportive, and confidential environment where you can connect with others on a similar path. Surrounded by stunning, peaceful scenery that promotes healing, you will discover that you are not alone and gain the skills needed for lasting change.

What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy involves one or more therapists working with several clients at the same time. These groups are typically designed to target a specific problem, such as depression or anxiety, or they can be focused on improving social skills and building emotional resilience. The group size is intentionally kept small to ensure that every member has an opportunity to participate and feel heard.

Unlike an anonymous support group, group therapy at Lenape is a formal treatment modality led by our caring, non-judgmental therapists. Their role is to facilitate conversation, provide guidance, and ensure the environment within our comfortable meeting spaces remains safe, productive, and focused on therapeutic goals drawn from established Psychotherapy principles.

“The program is the perfect fit for someone who needs structure and support… often times the group of clients is really great.”– DID-Beanie

The Unique Benefits of a Group Setting at Lenape

While one-on-one therapy is essential, our center’s group format offers distinct advantages amplified by our unique environment and community-focused approach.

  • A True Sense of Community: Here, you are not just a client, you are part of a family. You will bond with peers during sessions, over top-notch meals prepared by our chef, or while relaxing in our library.
  • Gaining Perspective: Hearing from others about how they handle their problems can provide you with a wide range of new strategies and viewpoints to consider for your own situation.
  • Instilling Hope: Seeing others in the group who are further along in their recovery journey provides tangible proof that healing is possible and serve as a powerful source of inspiration.
  • A Safe Space to Practice: The group setting is a “social laboratory” where you can practice new ways of relating to others, supported by peers who understand what you’re going through.
  • Altruism and Self-Esteem: The act of helping others within the group—by offering support, sharing your experiences, or providing feedback—can significantly boost your own self-esteem and confidence.

What to Expect in a Group Therapy Session

Joining a therapy group for the first time can feel intimidating. Our staff is dedicated to making this experience as welcoming as possible when you arrive at our beautiful facility. Every group session at Lenape Wellness Center begins with a reminder of the most important rule: confidentiality. What is shared in the group stays in the group. This creates the foundation of trust necessary for open and honest communication.

A typical session might begin with members checking in. The therapist then guides the conversation toward the day’s topic or a specific issue. The environment is collaborative; you are encouraged to offer feedback and support to others, just as you will receive it from them. You are always in control of how much you share, and there is immense value in simply listening from the comfort of our intimate group setting.

“The connections you make with other patients is truly special. Everyone understands what you’re going through and it helps you to feel comfortable.”– Brianna M.

Types of Groups Offered at Lenape Wellness

We offer a variety of therapy groups to meet the diverse needs of our clients. These groups provide a structured environment to learn and practice specific, evidence-based skills crucial for mental wellness. Our unique, hands-on activities often enhance our groups.

  • Skills-Based Groups: These groups are focused on teaching practical coping mechanisms. For example, a group might be centered around the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to manage anxiety, or mindfulness techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
  • Process-Oriented Groups: These groups are less structured and focus on exploring the group dynamics themselves. Members gain insight by examining how they interact with others in the here-and-now of the session.
  • Support Groups: These groups provide a safe space for people with shared experiences (such as grief or trauma) to offer each other comfort, encouragement, and support.
  • Holistic & Experiential Groups: Many of our group activities are experiential. You may find yourself connecting with peers during Equine Therapy, finding calm together in a yoga session, or sharing a breakthrough during a sound bath as part of our Holistic Therapy offerings.

Combining Group Therapy with Other Treatments

Group therapy is a powerful modality on its own, but its effects are often magnified when combined with other forms of treatment. It serves as the perfect complement to the deep, personalized work done in Individual Therapy.

In your individual sessions, you might uncover a specific pattern or challenge. The group setting then provides an immediate, real-world environment to practice new skills and get supportive feedback from people who truly understand. This integrated approach, which forms the core of our program, ensures that you are healing on multiple levels—internally through personal insight and externally through interpersonal connection.
