Family Therapy

When one person in a family is struggling with their mental health, the entire family system is affected. The stress, confusion, and worry can create distance and strain even the strongest bonds. Family therapy is a powerful form of psychotherapy designed to address these challenges head-on, treating the family as a whole unit. It’s a process of healing not just the individual, but the relationships that are foundational to their well-being.

At Lenape Wellness Center, we understand that family support is a critical component of lasting recovery. Our approach to family therapy is built on providing a safe, neutral, and compassionate space for communication and reconnection.

Within the tranquility of our facility, away from the pressures of daily life, your family can learn to navigate difficulties together and rediscover the strength and love that holds you together.

What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the interactions and dynamics between family members. It is based on the belief that problems do not exist in a vacuum; they are often influenced by and, in turn, influence the family system. The goal is not to place blame on any single individual, but to identify and change unhealthy patterns of communication and behavior for the benefit of the entire family.

Our experienced therapists act as objective mediators and guides, helping your family understand one another’s perspectives and work collaboratively toward shared goals. The focus is on improving the overall functioning of the family unit, making it a healthier and more supportive environment for everyone.

“Bella has been a tremendous help to my son, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Lenape is an incredible facility that truly stands out… The difference they’ve made in his progress and overall well being is remarkable. Highly recommend Lenape for anyone seeking quality mental health support!”– Margaret S.

The Goals of Family Therapy

Every family is unique, and your therapist will work with you to establish goals that are specific to your situation. However, some common objectives of family therapy include:

  • Improving Communication: Learning to listen actively, express emotions constructively, and break cycles of misunderstanding.
  • Fostering Empathy and Understanding: Helping family members see situations from each other’s perspectives, which is crucial when a loved one is facing a mental health challenge.
  • Establishing Healthy Boundaries: Defining clear and respectful limits that support both individual autonomy and family cohesion.
  • Developing Conflict Resolution Skills: Acquiring practical tools to navigate disagreements in a healthier, more productive way.
  • Strengthening the Family System: Increasing support for the family member in treatment and improving the resilience of the entire family unit.

Our Approach to Family Therapy at Lenape

We believe that a change in environment can create a powerful shift in dynamics. Holding sessions at our serene, peaceful facility provides neutral territory, allowing family members to step away from the charged atmosphere of home and engage with each other more openly. Here, difficult conversations are supported by the calming influence of our surroundings.

Our approach often involves more than just talking. A therapy session might be integrated with a shared, calming activity on our beautiful grounds. This type of Experiential Therapy can help rebuild bonds and create positive new memories, reminding the family of their capacity for connection and joy. We help families learn not just to talk, but to be with each other in a healthier way.

“My daughter… was diagnosed… and it has been one of the hardest battles I’ve ever been through, God sent us an angle… that stepped in when every door was closed and assisted her to an amazing facility (Lenape)… that nursed her back to health.”– Tenaya J.

What to Expect in a Family Therapy Session

Family therapy sessions at Lenape are tailored to your family’s needs. Your therapist may meet with the entire family at once, or in smaller subgroups (e.g., parents only, or siblings). Sometimes, the therapist will continue to see a family member for Individual Therapy while also conducting family sessions.

The focus will be on patterns. The therapist will observe how your family interacts and help you identify recurring dynamics that may be causing distress. You will learn practical skills, often drawing from principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to challenge negative assumptions about one another and build more positive cycles of interaction.

The goal is always to empower the family to solve its own problems with new tools and understanding.

Is Family Therapy Right for Us?

Family therapy can be beneficial for any family facing a significant stressor. It is particularly effective when a member is diagnosed with a mental health condition, but it can also help with grief, substance use issues, or major life transitions. It’s a sign of strength to seek help for your family.

Many people worry that therapy will be a session of blame or “airing dirty laundry.” Our therapists are skilled at ensuring that every member feels respected and heard, and that no single person is made into the “scapegoat.” The focus is on finding solutions for the future, not dwelling on blame for the past.

Other family members may also find it helpful to seek their own support in modalities like Group Therapy.
